P1 Volvo T5 Tuning Stages Explained: What You Need for Stage 0 to Stage 3 (and Beyond)

Thinking about tuning your P1 T5? I've broken down Stage 0 to Stage 3 and beyond, covering what parts you actually need at each stage and roughly what power to expect, so you can plan it properly.

"What do I actually need for Stage 2?" I get asked that, or something very like it, most weeks. And fair enough. Every tuner, forum and Facebook group seems to have its own idea of what each stage means, and it's easy to end up buying bits you don't need yet, or skipping the ones you really do.

So here's how I see the P1 Volvo T5 tuning stages, written down once and properly. It covers the C30, S40, V50 and C70 T5, which all share the same 2.5-litre five-pot. For each stage I'll go through what's required, what's optional, and roughly where you'll end up power-wise.

One thing up front: we don't do remaps ourselves at ÄLG. We do the hardware that has to be in place for one, so your mapper has something solid to work with.

Quick-Reference: P1 T5 Tuning Stages at a Glance

Stage Required Optional Approx. power
Stage 0 Full service, spark plugs, oil and filters, check all pipes and hoses – Standard
Stage 1 Nothing beyond Stage 0. It's a remap on healthy standard hardware Performance air filter, cat-back exhaust Circa 260bhp
Stage 2 Better-flowing intake (high-flow panel filter or full intake kit), exhaust changes (sports cat for road use, decat for off-road only), upgraded RS-spec clutch – Circa 280bhp
Stage 3 All Stage 2 hardware (including the better-flowing intake) plus an uprated intercooler Upgraded wastegate actuator, boost pipes, inlet plenum Circa 300–330bhp
Beyond Stage 3 Upgraded injectors, higher-flow fuel pump, bigger turbo, oil cooler – Depends on the build

All power figures are approximate. Every car is different, and the map makes a big difference.

Stage 0: Get the Car Healthy First

Stage 0 is the one nobody wants to talk about, but it's the most important. These cars are getting on a bit now, and a remap will find any weak spot quickly. Before you spend a penny on performance parts, I'd want to see:

  • A full service. Oil and filters done properly, with no corners cut.
  • Fresh spark plugs. Tired plugs and a tune don't mix.
  • Every pipe and hose checked. Look at the coolant hoses, boost pipes and vacuum lines. Anything perished, split or soft gets replaced now, not after it lets go on the motorway.

None of it is glamorous. But if you start from a healthy car, everything you add after this works the way it should.

Stage 1: The Remap (and That's About It)

Here's the good news. A Stage 1 remap on a P1 T5 doesn't need any extra hardware. If you've done your Stage 0 homework, you're ready. A good Stage 1 map gets a T5 to circa 260bhp, and it transforms how the car drives.

Optional at Stage 1: - A performance air filter. It's a nice extra for a bit more induction noise. If you want to go further, my picks are the Focus RS Style Crossover Intake or the do88 T5 Turbo Intake Pipe Kit. Pair either with our P1 Air Scoop & Snorkel Kit to feed it cold air from behind the grille. - A cat-back exhaust. It's mostly for the sound. It isn't needed for the map. For the C30 there's the KMS range: Firestorm, Thunderstorm and Section 18 for facelift cars, and the Firestorm, Thunderstorm and Section 18 for pre-facelift. Jetex also do T5 cat-backs to suit the C30 pre-facelift (up to 2009), the S40/V50 (04-on) and the C70 Mk2 (06-on). Just make sure you pick the one for your model and year.

While you're at it, Stage 1 is a good time to sort how the car drives, not just how fast it goes. Our Billet Offset Torque Mount is a favourite for exactly that reason. It cuts out the engine rock and clunk you get from the soft factory mount, and with more torque going through it, you'll notice the difference. And once you've got more power, a P1 Dash Cluster Boost Gauge Pod lets you see what the turbo's actually doing.

Volvo T5 Stage 2: Where Hardware Starts to Matter

Stage 2 is where it stops being "just a map". To get to circa 280bhp safely, you need three things.

1. A better-flowing intake

The factory airbox becomes a restriction at this point. You've got two routes: - a high-flow panel filter in the standard airbox, if you want to keep things simple and quiet-ish; or - a full intake kit, like the Focus RS Style Crossover Intake or the do88 T5 Turbo Intake Pipe Kit. Those are the two I'd go for.

2. Exhaust changes

The engine needs to breathe out as well as in. Two options here, and please read this part carefully:

  • Sports cat, for legal on-road driving. A high-flow sports cat keeps a catalyst in the system. Always check what's required where you live and drive, as emissions and MOT rules vary.
  • Decat, strictly for off-road use only. A decat is for track or competition cars. It isn't for road use, and on a UK road car a missing cat is an MOT failure.

3. An upgraded clutch (RS version)

This is the one people forget. The standard T5 clutch isn't designed for the extra torque a Stage 2 map makes, and a slipping clutch will ruin your day and your map. An upgraded RS-version clutch is on the required list at Stage 2. The LUK RS Mk2 Clutch Kit (inc. slave cylinder) is the M66/T5 upgrade we'd point you to. Drop me an email if you're not sure it's right for your car.

C30 T5 Stage 3: Pushing the Standard Turbo

Stage 3 takes all of the Stage 2 hardware, including that better-flowing intake, and adds one more must-have: an uprated intercooler. This is the bit that lets the standard turbo really stretch its legs, and it gets you to circa 300–330bhp.

The intercooler isn't optional here. At this sort of power the standard one just can't keep charge temps down, so the AIRTEC T5 Intercooler is the one I'd point you to.

Optional at Stage 3: - An upgraded wastegate actuator, like the MSD340 Uprated Wastegate Actuator. It's worth considering, but only fit one if your mapper is going to map for it. - Boost pipes. They're optional but really popular at this stage. Our ÄLG T5 Boost Pipe Kit is what most people go for. - An inlet plenum. It's a great accessory at Stage 3 but definitely not essential. Have a look at the MLM Sport Cast Inlet Plenum or the Pumaspeed Plenum.

Beyond Stage 3: The Big Stuff

Past Stage 3, you're outgrowing the standard fuelling and turbo, and the shopping list gets serious:

At this level, every build is a bit different, so it's worth planning the whole thing with your mapper rather than buying bits one at a time.

Don't Forget the Chassis

More power is only half the story. If you're lowering the car on the way, our ÄLG P1 Lowering Springs are a best seller. Pair them with ÄLG Adjustable Camber Arms to sort out the extra rear camber that comes with lowering, and Driveshaft Spacers to help your driveshafts survive the new geometry. Lowered P1s are known for wearing them out early.

And while you're improving how it drives, our best-selling P1 M66 Short Shifter Kit tightens up the long factory gear change. It's a great match for a new clutch and torque mount.

P1 T5 Tuning Stages: FAQ

Do I need any parts for a Stage 1 remap on my C30 or V50 T5? No. Stage 1 doesn't need any extra hardware. Just make sure the car is healthy first, with a full service, plugs, oil, filters and every pipe checked.

What's the difference between Stage 2 and Stage 3 on a T5? Stage 2 needs a better-flowing intake, exhaust changes and an upgraded RS clutch, for circa 280bhp. Stage 3 keeps all of that and adds an uprated intercooler, for circa 300–330bhp. An upgraded actuator, boost pipes and an inlet plenum are all optional extras.

Do I really need a new clutch for Stage 2? Yes. The standard clutch isn't built for Stage 2 torque, so an upgraded RS-version clutch is on the required list.

Is a decat legal? Not for road use in the UK. A missing cat is an MOT failure. If you're driving on the road, go for a sports cat and check your local requirements. Decats are for off-road use only.

When do I need injectors, a fuel pump or a bigger turbo? Once you're going beyond Stage 3. Up to Stage 3, the standard fuelling and turbo are fine with the right supporting hardware.
